 The Institute of Ecotourism, Srinakharinwirot University, Bangkok, Thailand was established on June 17, 1994 by the University Council at Patumwan Campus for the purpose of encouraging ecotourism studies. The institute aims to develop ethics and standards for ecotourism, promote understanding, appreciation and conservation of the natural and cultural environment, and facilitate interaction between tourist, host communities, the tourism industry, government and conservation organization. The degradation of the environment is a critical issue so we plan :
- To establish national, regional and international network in ecotourism and communicate
within the network
- To establish a data base of information and research in ecotourism
- To establish educational and training programs in ecotourism
- To implement ecotourism in Thailand
During establishing we organized the first International Conference on ecotourism from 6-8 February 1995.The conference jointly sponsored by Srinakharinwirot University, The Canadian High Commission and the Canadian Development Agency (CIDA) and the Australian International Development Assistant Bureau(AIDAB). The second International Conference focusing on Ecotourism in Southeast Asia from 18-21 July 1996. Entitled ' The Implementation of Ecotourism : Planning, Developing and Managing for Sustainability'. It was hosted by the Institute of Ecotourism, Srinakharinwirot University, and cooperation with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and The Department of Technical and Economic Cooperation (DTEC). The success of the conferences were very useful that could encourage the environmentalist enthusiasm and had strong potential.
Initially, we lacked of lecturers to teach so we actively pursued international contact with oversea university for cooperative faculty exchange and received funding from Oxford Brook University and British Council in 2003 then we sent our staffs for short-term academic program or participation in seminar , academic meeting and joint research project with Oxford Brook University , England.
The Institute and the Graduate School plan to offer a Master's of Science degree in Eco-Tourism(M.Sc.) that provides a specialist postgraduate qualification in Eco-tourism management and is designed to develop trained professionals through action research.
